Matthew Perry, a 54-year-old American actor, passed away. He was famous for his role as the witty Chandler Bing in the iconic 90s TV show Friends.
Law enforcement officials informed US media that the actor’s body was discovered at his Los Angeles residence.
From 1994 until 2004, viewers could follow the adventures of six New York City youths on the hit television show Friends.
The most-watched television episode of the 2000s was its last episode, which 52.5 million Americans watched.
The actor was discovered lifeless in a hot tub at his mansion, according to the LA Times and TMZ, the first news outlets to announce Perry’s death.
According to a spokeswoman from the Los Angeles Fire Department who talked with the BBC, officers responded to a call about a “water emergency” at an address in the Pacific Palisades region; however, the spokesperson did not mention Perry by name.
Warner Bros., the show’s producers, called Perry a “true gift to us all” after the long-running series’ enduring popularity and the joy it brought to new generations of viewers through worldwide reruns.
Perry was brought up in Ottawa, Canada, after being born in Massachusetts in 1969. He went to primary school with Justin Trudeau, who would eventually become prime minister of Canada.
On X, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada expressed his sorrow and sadness at Matthew Perry’s loss. Both the schoolyard games we played together and the happiness he brought to people’s lives will remain etched in my memory forever. Matthew, I am grateful for all the laughter. You were cherished, and we shall miss you.
Being a youngster at the time, Perry relocated to Los Angeles. In addition to his appearances on Growing Pains and Boys Will Be Boys, he played the part of Chazz Russell.
However, he rose to fame on Friends, a show that chronicled the friendship, dating, and professional lives of six New Yorkers.
Among the all-time most popular series, the comedy featured Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow.
Perry plays Chandler Bing, the comically awkward roommate of Joey Tribbiani, who is known for his biting one-liners and naive antics. An Emmy nomination came his way in 2002 for the performance.
Despite his meteoric rise to stardom, Perry battled an alcohol and painkiller addiction and made repeated trips to recovery centers.
He admitted to BBC Radio 2 in 2016 that he was so inebriated throughout the three years of filming for Friends that he forgot what it was like.
He mentioned that he wasn’t a fan of the show in an interview from last year.
The host could have added, “Drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine,” so he skipped the show. Seasonally, I could tell just by looking at myself. That is exactly what I perceive, which is why I am not interested in watching it.
It has been a remarkable thing to see it move people of all ages, so I’m considering starting to watch it.
“Shock” and a “ubiquitous response” to the news that Perry had died were the overarching emotions felt in Los Angeles, according to entertainment reporter Sean Mandell.
In an interview with BBC News, he described Perry as being “at the hub of the wheel” and a key figure in Friends’ success.
According to him, his character was a unique blend of genuine emotion and wit, and it was firmly based.
Although Perry had a number of film appearances—including in Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes, and the Whole Nine Yards—he was never able to find another movie project that had the same level of success as Friends.
But he did get some praise for his later TV work.
Two Emmy nods for outstanding guest actor in a drama series were bestowed to him in 2003 and 2004 for his portrayal of Joe Quincy, associate White House counsel, in Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing. Before writing and producing his own show, Mr. Sunshine, in which he co-starred with Aaron Sorkin, he appeared as the lead in Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, one of Aaron Sorkin’s later programs.
His last major television effort, excluding the Friends reunion, was a three-season American reboot of The Odd Couple. Perry tweeted in 2017 that he learned of the cancellation when he got to set and saw that someone had painted over his face on the stage door with green paint.
The first of Perry’s Friends co-stars to publicly honor the actor was Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice, Chandler’s problematic ex-girlfriend.
The happiness that Perry offered to “so many” during his “too short lifetime will live on,” according to Wheeler.
When asked about the creative moments they shared, she said, “I feel so very blessed.” on Instagram.
Speaking about the tragic passing of her “son,” Matthew Perry, actress Morgan Fairchild expressed her grief: “I’m heartbroken about the untimely death of my’son,’ Matthew Perry.”
With an additional “the loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock,” she continued.
“All of us loved Matthew Perry, and I did especially,” Selma Blair remarked of Perry, who she called her “oldest boy friend” in Cruel Intentions. All day long. I loved him no matter what. He was also my boyfriend.
Plus, I’m shattered. Feeling downhearted. Get some rest, Matty. Have a restful night.
Matthew Perry’s most recent Instagram post was five days ago. The photo he posted of himself in the hot tub was disturbing.
